Vanderbilt Bedford: A powerful new partnership assures world-class care.

A great care team joins the best: In 2021 Shelbyville’s 60-bed hospital and associated clinics became Vanderbilt Bedford when they were acquired by Vanderbilt Health, the Nashville-based healthcare system nationally known and respected for its ground-breaking innovations and world-class expertise.

This new partnership means that while the local Bedford care team of approximately 275 continues to deliver a wide range of services—from critical and specialty care to advanced diagnostic services, wound and sleep care, physical therapy and more—their excellent care is now backed by the financial and knowledge resources of a healthcare organization trusted by patients and esteemed by medical leaders around the globe for setting new standards in a spectrum of teaching, research and care services.

“Firsts” matched by “bests”:  Since 1874, Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) has pioneered life-saving advances in healthcare, laying the groundwork for open heart surgery in the 1930s, and in the 1940s developing a method of culturing vaccines that allowed the mass production of vaccines for smallpox, typhus and yellow fever. Today, as the institution’s quest for knowledge continues, Shelbyville-Bedford residents stand to benefit in crucial ways, including more convenient access to participation in clinical trials.

Doctor Visit

Access to the forefront of care: Today, VUMC’s myriad clinical trials include vital efforts such as:

  • Cancer treatment. Nearly 500 active clinical trials at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center brings together some of the world’s top specialists to lend expertise in pediatric cancer treatment, Phase I trials, immunotherapy, genomic therapy and investigator-initiated trials.
  • COVID-19 treatment. A testing site for Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine, VUMC continues to work as a national site for research of ACTIV-2 (Accelerated COVID-19 Therapeutic Interventions and Vaccine) protocols.
  • Diabetes treatment. Vanderbilt’s NIH-sponsored Diabetes Center’s ongoing research and treatment innovations currently include a trial of a real-time continuous glucose monitoring system.

In Shelbyville-Bedford, we believe our region offers the world’s best quality of life; we know that quality is supported by world-class healthcare.
